How Stripe put my business in an extremely difficult position. I want to share my experience with Stripe so that other entrepreneurs understand the risks of becoming completely dependent on a single payment provider.

I have been running a SaaS business in France for approximately one year. In the beginning, everything worked perfectly well with Stripe. I gradually started investing in advertising, first through social media and later through Google Ads. I deliberately grew the business slowly, increasing my advertising budget as the company expanded.

After several months, I decided to expand into other European countries. The business continued to grow progressively until we were processing approximately €2,000–€3,000 per day, while spending around €800 per day on advertising. That is when the problems started.

One day, when I attempted to initiate a payout from Stripe, I saw an alert informing me that my account was undergoing a “routine review” and that the process could take between 24 and 48 hours. A few hours later, the restriction disappeared and I was able to initiate my payout. The following day, exactly the same thing happened again. This continued for approximately a week: reviews, temporary restrictions, and then access being restored.

Then things became much more concerning. There was no longer any specific warning displayed on my account, and Stripe continued accepting payments from my customers, but I was no longer able to transfer the money to my bank account. Every time I attempted a payout, I received a red error message.

I contacted Stripe support through their live chat to understand what was happening. I was told that my account was restricted and that I needed to provide documents. However, I had received no email clearly explaining the situation or the exact reason for the restriction. I therefore waited, expecting to eventually receive an official email or verification request.

For approximately a week, nothing arrived. Meanwhile, Stripe continued processing my customers’ payments, and approximately €20,000 accumulated in my Stripe balance without me being able to access it. For my business, this money represented essential working capital. I was spending approximately €800 every day on advertising, in addition to paying for the APIs and infrastructure required to operate my service.

Then, one day, my account was suspended. Stripe informed me that they could no longer support my business and that the remaining funds could be held for 120 days before being returned to me. That was when I truly understood how devastating this type of decision can be for a business.

I completely understand that a payment processor may need to conduct reviews, request documentation, or even decide that it no longer wants to provide services to a particular business. What I find extremely difficult to accept is the way the situation was handled: continuing to accept payments from my customers while preventing me from accessing those funds, providing no clear explanation for several days, and then potentially holding a significant amount of money for months.

Behind every Stripe account is a real business with expenses, suppliers, advertising costs, infrastructure, and financial obligations. A company can be profitable on paper and still find itself in serious difficulty simply because several weeks of working capital suddenly become inaccessible.

This experience taught me one very important lesson: never build a business that is completely dependent on a single payment provider. I deeply regret not implementing multiple payment solutions from the beginning. I am sharing this experience not to tell entrepreneurs that they should never use Stripe, but to strongly recommend having an alternative payment provider in place from day one. Because your account can work perfectly for months or even years… until one day, access to the money your business depends on suddenly disappears.
